Mats Johan Sundin is a Swedish ice hockey executive and former professional player who is currently serving as the Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations for the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played as a center for 18 seasons in the NHL, representing the Quebec Nordiques, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vancouver Canucks from 1990 to 2009. Drafted first overall in 1989, Sundin initially played with the Quebec Nordiques, where he demonstrated a scoring breakout during the 1992–93 season with thirty consecutive games registering points, a streak that remains unmatched. He was traded to the Maple Leafs in 1994, where he became team captain for 11 seasons and was the longest-serving non-North American-born captain in NHL history at the end of the 2007–08 season. Sundin's career includes appearances in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 10 of his 18 seasons, with consistent scoring performance throughout. He recorded at least 70 points in every full season of his career aside from his rookie year, the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season, and his final season with Vancouver. On 14 October 2006, he became the first Swedish player to score 500 goals and is the franchise’s all-time leader in points with 987. Over his NHL tenure, he accumulated 1,349 points in 1,346 games, averaging just over a point per game. Internationally, Sundin secured three gold medals at the World Championships and captained Sweden to Olympic gold in 2006. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2013, and was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in 2017. In May 2026, Sundin returned to the Maple Leafs in his current executive role.
