Luca Guadagnino is an Italian film director and producer born in Palermo. His work is known for its emotional complexity, eroticism, and lavish visuals. Guadagnino has received numerous accolades including a Silver Lion and an Independent Spirit Award. He has also been nominated for an Academy Award, two Golden Globes, and three BAFTAs. Born to an Algerian mother and a Sicilian father, he spent part of his childhood in Ethiopia before returning to Italy due to the Ethiopian Civil War. He began his career with short films and documentaries before making his feature-film debut with The Protagonists in 1999. Guadagnino collaborated multiple times with actress Tilda Swinton and gained further recognition with his Desire trilogy comprising I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, and Call Me by Your Name, the latter of which brought him international fame. His 2018 film Suspiria, a remake of the 1977 horror film, marked his entry into the genre but received mixed critical responses and was a box office failure. In 2020, he made his television debut with the HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are. His more recent works include the romantic horror Bones and All, the sports film Challengers, the period romantic drama Queer, and the psychological thriller After the Hunt. Beyond filmmaking, Guadagnino has directed documentaries, including Bertolucci on Bertolucci and Salvatore: The Shoemaker of Dreams, and has been involved in fashion advertising for brands such as Fendi and Salvatore Ferragamo. In 2012, he founded the Frenesy Film Company and has produced several films and documentaries.
