Lisa Valerie Kudrow, born on July 30, 1963, is an American actress and writer known for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the television sitcom Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004. Her performance as Phoebe earned her numerous awards including a Primetime Emmy, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and several others. This role has been recognized as one of the greatest television characters of all time and marked her breakout role, leading to a successful film and television career. Kudrow's early appearances include episodes of Cheers in 1989 and Mad About You in 1993, where she played the character Ursula. Her character on Mad About You was integrated into the Friends storyline as Phoebe’s twin. In film, she starred in Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion in 1997 and received critical acclaim for her role in The Opposite of Sex in 1998, winning awards and earning several nominations. She created, produced, wrote, and starred in the HBO mockumentary series The Comeback, which initially aired in 2005 and was revived in 2014 and 2026, earning her Emmy nominations across three seasons.
