His early film roles include the 1965 epic The Greatest Story Ever Told, where he played the son of Sidney Poitier's character, Simon of Cyrene. He also appeared in films like Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971) and Brother on the Run (1973). In the 1980s, Johnson was active in the Los Angeles music scene as a musician and songwriter. His song 'Ready To Receive' was recorded by folk and pop artist Claudia Russell. In the early 2000s, he hosted a radio show on KNFT in Silver City, New Mexico.
