Kobe Bean Bryant was an American professional basketball player who played his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the National Basketball Association. Known by the nickname the Black Mamba, he was a five-time NBA champion, two-time NBA Finals MVP, and the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player. Bryant also achieved international success as a two-time gold medalist with the U.S. Olympic teams in 2008 and 2012. Born in Philadelphia to NBA player Joe Bryant and his mother Pam, he spent part of his childhood in Italy before playing high school basketball at Lower Merion High School outside of Philadelphia. He opted out of college basketball and declared for the 1996 NBA draft, being selected 13th by the Charlotte Hornets and subsequently traded to the Lakers. Throughout his career, Bryant earned numerous honors, including 15 NBA All-Rookie Team selections, 18 All-Star appearances, and four NBA All-Star Game MVP awards. He led the league in scoring twice and scored 81 points in a single game, the third most in NBA history. Bryant was also recognized for his defensive skills, earning 12 All-Defensive Team selections, and ranks fourth in league history for both regular season and postseason scoring. His achievements include being the Lakers' all-time leading scorer and the first guard to play 20 NBA seasons. Off the court, Bryant received the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball. He passed away in January 2020 in a helicopter crash that also claimed his daughter Gianna and seven others, prompting tributes including murals, memorials, and honors such as the renaming of the NBA All-Star Game MVP award in his memory.
