Joshua Gibson was an American professional baseball catcher who primarily played in the Negro leagues. His career included stints with the Homestead Grays from 1930 to 1931 and from 1937 to 1939 and 1942 to 1946, as well as the Pittsburgh Crawfords from 1932 to 1936. In addition to his time in the United States, he played for Ciudad Trujillo in the Dominican League in 1937 and in the Mexican League for Azules de Veracruz from 1940 to 1941. Gibson also served as the first manager of the Cangrejeros de Santurce within the Puerto Rico Baseball League. Recognized as a spectacular power hitter, he is credited with hitting close to 800 career home runs according to some accounts. His Negro League statistics record 166 home runs, while Major League Baseball recognizes 171. Known as the black Babe Ruth, Gibson was distinguished by his outstanding offensive skills, and at the peak of his career, he stood 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighed 210 pounds. He achieved the rare feat of winning consecutive batting Triple Crowns, leading the league in home runs, runs batted in, and batting average, a feat no batter has replicated since. Gibson was never able to play in the American League or the National League due to the unwritten
