Thomas Jonathan Ossoff, born February 16, 1987, is an American politician who has served as the senior United States senator from Georgia since 2021. He is a member of the Democratic Party and is recognized as the youngest incumbent U.S. senator and the youngest senior senator of the United States. Ossoff's career includes work as a national security staffer and legislative assistant for U.S. representative Hank Johnson, as well as managing director of an investigative documentary production company. He first sought elected office in a 2017 special election for Georgia’s congressional seat, narrowly losing a contest that had long been considered a Republican stronghold. In 2021, Ossoff was elected to the U.S. Senate after defeating Republican incumbent David Perdue in a runoff election. His victory, alongside fellow Democrat Raphael Warnock on the same day, was instrumental in establishing a 50–50 Senate majority for the Democratic Party, with Vice President Kamala Harris serving as the tie-breaking vote. Ossoff's election marked several historic milestones; he is the youngest person elected to the Senate since 1980, the first senator born in the 1980s, and the first millennial U.S. senator. Since Zell Miller left office in 2005, Ossoff and Warnock have been the only Democrats representing Georgia in the Senate.
