John Charles Bryan Barnes born on November 7, 1963, is a former professional football player and manager. He is regarded as one of the greatest England players of all time and one of Liverpool’s most celebrated players. Throughout his football career, Barnes was known for his speed and skill as a left winger before transitioning to central midfield later in his career. He achieved notable success with Liverpool, winning two League titles and two FA Cups, and scored 106 goals in 403 matches for the club. Barnes earned 79 international caps for England, making him the most capped black England player at the time of his last appearance in 1995. Born and raised in Jamaica, he moved to London at age 12 and began his professional journey with Watford at 17, where he played 296 games and scored 85 goals. After transferring to Liverpool in 1987 for £900,000, his ten seasons with the club solidified his legacy. Following his playing career, Barnes held managerial roles including positions with Tranmere Rovers, the Jamaica national team, and an interim coaching role at Celtic. He has also worked as an author, commentator, and pundit for ESPN and SuperSport. His contributions to football have been recognized through several awards, including induction into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005.
