James William Lindberg, born July 26, 1965, is an American singer and guitarist known for his long-standing involvement in the punk rock scene. He gained prominence as the lead singer and songwriter of the band Pennywise, a role he held from 1988 until 2009 and resumed in 2012. Lindberg became the band's main lyricist following the death of bassist Jason Thirsk, who had influenced Pennywise’s message of positive mental attitude and self-reliance. An accomplished UCLA English major, Lindberg frequently cited American transcendentalist philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau as major influences on his songwriting. His lyrics often embody themes of individualism and personal freedom, emphasizing living life according to one's own principles and resisting societal materialism. In addition to Pennywise, Lindberg founded The Black Pacific, which released its debut album in 2010. His work reflects a commitment to personal and philosophical authenticity, aligning with the transcendentalist ideals that have shaped much of his musical and lyrical approach.
