Jesse Louis Jackson was an American civil rights activist, LGBTQ rights advocate, politician, ordained Baptist minister, and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1941, he became a prominent civil rights leader during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Jackson was a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr. and James Bevel during the civil rights movement and began his activism in the 1960s. He established organizations that later merged into the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, which advocates for social justice and equality.

Expanding his influence into international affairs in the 1980s, Jackson was a vocal critic of the Reagan administration and launched presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988. Although initially considered a fringe candidate, he finished third in 1984 and as the runner-up in 1988 for the Democratic nomination. From 1991 to 1997, he served as a shadow United States senator representing the District of Columbia. Jackson also hosted the television program Both Sides with Jesse Jackson on CNN from 1992 to 2000.

Throughout his career, Jackson was an outspoken critic of police brutality, the Republican Party, and conservative policies. He was initially critical of President Bill Clinton but later became a supporter and friend.
