Jess Phillips, born Jessica Rose Trainor on October 9, 1981, is a British politician serving as the Member of Parliament for Birmingham Yardley since 2015. She is a member of the Labour Party and holds the position of Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding. Phillips has been actively involved in issues related to safeguarding and violence against women and girls, having served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls from July 2024 to May 2026. Throughout her parliamentary career, she was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Lucy Powell, the Shadow Education Secretary, in 2015. Phillips has been vocal in her political stance, notably criticizing the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, the former Leader of the Labour Party, and resigning from her PPS role in protest. She expressed doubts about continuing as an MP if Corbyn were re-elected as leader and supported Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership challenge. She also participated as a candidate in the 2020 Labour leadership election but withdrew early from the contest.
