About Jerome Powell

Jerome Hayden Powell, born on February 4, 1953, is an American central banker and attorney who served as the 16th chair of the Federal Reserve from 2018 to 2026. He has a background in law and investment banking and has held roles both in the private sector and in public service. Powell graduated from Princeton University and the Georgetown University Law Center. After practicing law for five years, he transitioned into investment banking and private equity, eventually becoming a partner at the Carlyle Group in 1997. In 2005, he founded Severn Capital Partners, a boutique private equity firm. Powell also served as a visiting scholar at the Bipartisan Policy Center from 2010 to 2012. His public service career began in 1990 with positions at the United States Treasury Department under President George H. W. Bush. He was appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 2012 by President Barack Obama. President Donald Trump appointed him as Chair in 2018, and he was re-nominated by President Joe Biden in 2021. As a Fed governor, Powell earned a reputation as a consensus-builder during the 2010s. During his tenure as Chair, he navigated significant economic challenges, including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation surges, and global trade uncertainties. His leadership contributed to a broad uplift in financial markets, though his approach also drew some criticism due to the divergence between the U.S. economy and the financial sector. In 2026, Powell and the residents of the Twin Cities of Minnesota received the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.
