Jerome Myers: podcast appearances and interviews

Jerome Myers was an American artist and writer associated with the Ashcan School, known for his sympathetic depictions of urban landscapes and their inhabitants. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, and raised in Philadelphia, Trenton, and Baltimore, Myers spent most of his adult life in New York City. He initially worked as an actor and scene painter before studying art at Cooper Union for a year and attending the Art Students League for eight years, where he was primarily taught by George de Forest Brush. In 1896, Myers traveled to Paris for a brief period but considered the streets of New York City's Lower East Side his primary classroom. His work was heavily influenced by his deep interest in new immigrants, resulting in over a thousand drawings, paintings, etchings, and watercolors portraying their lives outside tenements. Myers expressed his belief that cities were his greatest source of inspiration, highlighting his ability to see poetry and beauty amid urban poverty rather than ugliness and degradation. He was one of the main organizers of the 1913 Armory Show, which played a significant role in introducing European modernism to America.
