Jeffrey Scott Buckley was an American musician who gained recognition in the early 1990s after establishing himself as a session guitarist in Los Angeles. He developed a following through performances in the East Village of Manhattan and subsequently signed with Columbia Records. In 1994, he released his only studio album, Grace, which was promoted through extensive touring across the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia. Buckley worked on a second album with the working title My Sweetheart the Drunk, collaborating with producer Tom Verlaine in New York City and later in Memphis, Tennessee. His career was cut short when he drowned while swimming in the Wolf River in 1997, while awaiting his band's arrival. Posthumous releases include demos and studio recordings related to his second album, as well as reissues of Grace and the Live at Sin-é EP. After his death, Buckley's reputation grew, and he has been recognized as an influence by artists such as Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy. His album Grace appears on multiple lists of the greatest albums, and his rendition of Leonard Cohen's song 'Hallelujah' has been acclaimed, being included in the American Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2014. In 2026, Buckley's work was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
