About Jane Lubchenco
Jane Lubchenco is an American environmental scientist and marine ecologist. She is affiliated with Oregon State University, where she teaches and conducts research. Her work encompasses a wide range of topics including interactions between the environment and human well-being, biodiversity, climate change, and the sustainable use of oceans and the planet. Lubchenco has held several prominent government positions, serving as the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 2009 to 2013, and as Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere. In February 2021, she was appointed by President Joe Biden to serve as deputy director for Climate and Environment in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Lubchenco's contributions to science and public service have been widely recognized; she received the MacArthur 'genius' award in 1993, and more than 20 honorary degrees. In 2002, Discover magazine named her one of the 50 most important women in science, and in 2010 she was designated as the first Newsmaker of the Year by the scientific journal Nature. During her career, she has also served as the Mimi and Peter Haas Distinguished Visitor in Public Service at Stanford University and was part of President-Elect Obama's 'science team.' Her extensive research and leadership have significantly advanced understanding of environmental issues and marine ecology.
