John Christopher Depp II, born on June 9, 1963, is an American actor, musician, and filmmaker. He has received multiple accolades including a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, along with nominations for three Academy Awards and two British Academy Film Awards. Depp's films, in which he frequently portrays eccentric characters, have collectively grossed over 10.8 billion dollars worldwide. He began his career as a musician performing in several amateur rock bands before making his feature film debut in the horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. Following an appearance in Platoon in 1986, Depp gained prominence as a teen idol through his role on the television series 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990. He has played lead roles in films such as Arizona Dream, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Benny Joon, Dead Man, Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Ninth Gate, Chocolat, and Blow.
