Jane Birkin: podcast appearances and interviews

Jane Mallory Birkin was an English-French actress and singer, primarily active in French cinema. Born in London, she began her acting career with minor roles in films such as Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup and Kaleidoscope in 1966. In 1968, she met Serge Gainsbourg while co-starring in the film Slogan, which led to a lengthy personal and professional relationship. The pair released their debut album, Jane Birkin/Serge Gainsbourg, in 1969, and she appeared in Gainsbourg's film Je t'aime moi non plus in 1976. Birkin mainly worked in France after establishing citizenship there, becoming a major star in French cinema, though she occasionally appeared in English-language films including Death on the Nile and Evil Under the Sun, as well as James Ivory's A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries. She was the mother of photographer Kate Barry with her first husband John Barry, actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg with Serge Gainsbourg, and musician Lou Doillon with Jacques Doillon. Birkin was associated with the Hermès Birkin handbag, which bears her name. After her separation from Gainsbourg in 1980, she continued to pursue her career as both an actress and singer, appearing in independent films and releasing numerous solo albums. In 2016, she starred in the short film La femme et le TGV, which received an Academy Award nomination and she indicated it was to be her final film role.
