John Anthony White, born Gillis on July 9, 1975, is an American musician and the guitarist and lead vocalist of the rock duo the White Stripes. He played a significant role in the indie and garage rock movements of the 2000s, recognized for his distinctive musical techniques and use of analog technology. White began his career performing in underground Detroit bands as a drummer and guitarist before co-founding the White Stripes with Meg White in 1997. The band achieved international fame with their 2001 album White Blood Cells and subsequent releases, establishing White as a key figure in the rock revival of the decade. In addition to his work with the White Stripes, he co-founded the record label and studio Third Man Records in 2001 and was involved in other projects, including the groups the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather. White has collaborated with various artists and recorded notable tracks such as the theme for James Bond’s Quantum of Solace, performed with Alicia Keys. His solo career began with the 2012 album Blunderbuss, which received strong reviews and commercial success. His follow-up albums, Lazaretto, No Name, and Frozen Charlotte, have also garnered critical and commercial acclaim. White has acted in several films, joined the Library of Congress' National Recording Preservation Foundation, and exhibited his art. He has received numerous awards, including twelve Grammys, and has been recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. In 2025, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the White Stripes.
