Ian Hunter Patterson, born on 3 June 1939, is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band Mott the Hoople, which he led from its formation in 1969 until its disbandment in 1974, and during the band's reunions in 2009, 2013, and 2019. Prior to joining Mott the Hoople, Hunter was already active as a musician and songwriter, and he continued working in this capacity after leaving the band. Despite experiencing ill health and disillusionment with commercial success, he pursued a solo career and often collaborated with Mick Ronson. Mott the Hoople gained some commercial success and cultivated a dedicated fan base. As a solo artist, Hunter's work was more diverse and less mainstream, with notable songs including 'Once Bitten, Twice Shy,' which was later covered by Great White, and 'England Rocks,' which was adapted into 'Cleveland Rocks' and covered by the Presidents of the United States of America. The song 'Cleveland Rocks' also became part of the theme music for the television series The Drew Carey Show.
