Eldred Gregory Peck was an American actor renowned for his performances from the 1940s to the 1970s. Recognized as one of the most popular film stars of his era, he was named the 12th-greatest male star of Classic Hollywood Cinema by the American Film Institute in 1999. Peck studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner before beginning his acting career on stage, appearing in over 50 plays and three Broadway productions. He gained critical acclaim with the film The Keys of the Kingdom in 1944, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. Throughout his career, Peck starred in successful films including The Valley of Decision, Spellbound, and The Yearling. He also appeared in notable movies such as Moby Dick, The Guns of Navarone, Cape Fear, The Omen, and The Boys from Brazil. Peck was known for portraying protagonists with strong moral character, often reflecting themes of integrity and justice. His performance as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Peck's work frequently addressed important social issues; for example, Gentleman’s Agreement explored antisemitism, and Twelve O’Clock High depicted the challenges faced by military leaders during World War II. Beyond his film career, Peck was active politically, challenging the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947 and being recognized for his lifelong humanitarian efforts with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969. He also starred in The Scarlet and the Black in 1983, portraying Hugh O’Flaherty, a Catholic priest who helped save lives during World War II. Peck passed away at age 87 from bronchopneumonia.
