Virginia Marie Rometty, born on July 29, 1957, is an American business executive known for her extensive career at IBM. She joined IBM in 1981 as a systems engineer and rose through various leadership roles, including heading global sales, marketing, and strategy. As general manager of IBM's global services division, she played a key role in negotiating the company's acquisition of PricewaterhouseCoopers' IT consulting business in 2002. Rometty became the first woman to serve as chairman, president, and CEO of IBM in January 2012. During her tenure as CEO, she focused the company's strategic efforts on analytics, cloud computing, and cognitive systems. She served as executive chairman after stepping down as CEO on April 1, 2020, and retired from IBM on December 31, 2020, after nearly 40 years with the company.
