George Corley Wallace Jr. was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 45th governor of Alabama, with his tenure spanning multiple terms from 1963 to 1987. He is recognized as the longest-serving governor in Alabama history and one of the most notable figures in the state's political history. Wallace attended the University of Alabama School of Law and served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Following his military service, he was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives and also served as a state judge. His political career was marked by his adoption of a hard-line segregationist stance after an initial moderate position, especially during his campaigns for governor. He gained national notoriety by opposing desegregation efforts, notably blocking the entrance of the University of Alabama to prevent Black students from enrolling. Wallace's influence extended beyond Alabama through his multiple bids for the presidency; he ran for the Democratic nomination in 1964 and 1972 and campaigned as a third-party candidate in 1968, carrying five Southern states and securing electoral votes, an uncommon feat for a third-party candidate since 1948. His political life was interrupted in 1972 when he was shot and wounded while campaigning, which left him paralyzed below the waist. Despite this, he continued to serve as governor, winning re-election in 1974 and again in 1982, after moderating his stance on segregation and publicly renouncing his earlier segregationist policies. Wallace is remembered for his populist rhetoric, his staunch opposition to desegregation, and his lengthy service as Alabama's governor.
