Frank Ocean, born Christopher Edwin Breaux on October 28, 1987, is an American singer-songwriter and rapper recognized as a pioneer of the alternative R&B genre. His career began as a ghostwriter before he joined the Los Angeles-based hip hop collective Odd Future in 2010. Prior to that, he signed with RedZone Entertainment, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings, although his debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, was released independently in 2011. Ocean's debut studio album, Channel Orange, released in 2012, featured elements of R&B and soul music; it received critical acclaim, was nominated for Album of the Year at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, and won the Best Urban Contemporary Album award. The album's lead single, Thinkin Bout You, was nominated for Record of the Year. In 2013, he was named by Time magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people. Following a four-year hiatus, Ocean released the visual album Endless in 2016 to fulfill contractual obligations with Def Jam. His second studio album, Blonde, was released independently the same year; it expanded his experimental approach, debuted at the top of the US Billboard 200, and was ranked first on Pitchfork’s Best Albums of the 2010s list. Beyond his albums, Ocean has sporadically released singles, worked as a magazine photographer, launched the fashion brand Homer and started Homer Radio. His music has achieved commercial success with multiple entries on the Billboard Hot 100 and platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America.
