About Francis Fukuyama
Francis Yoshihiro Fukuyama is an American political scientist, political economist, and international relations scholar. He is an Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at Stanford University, where he also serves as the Mosbacher Director of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. Since July 2010, he has been a senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. In August 2019, he was appointed director of the Ford Dorsey Master’s in International Policy program at Stanford. Fukuyama is best known for his book The End of History and the Last Man published in 1992, in which he argued that the worldwide spread of liberal democracies and Western free-market capitalism could represent the final stage of humanity’s sociocultural evolution and political development. His academic career includes previous roles as a professor and Director of the International Development program at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies. He has also held the position of Omer L. and Nancy Hirst Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy. In addition to his teaching and research, Fukuyama serves as a council member of the International Forum for Democratic Studies, was a member of the Political Science Department at the RAND Corporation, and is one of the leading figures on the Information and Democracy Commission launched by Reporters Without Borders.
