Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman born on August 1, 1920, and who passed away on October 4, 1951. Her cancer cells became the source of the HeLa cell line, which is recognized as the first immortalized human cell line and remains one of the most significant in medical research. These cells were obtained from a tumor biopsied during her treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The cells were cultured by George Otto Gey, who created the HeLa cell line, which has the capacity to reproduce indefinitely under specific conditions. The use of her cells without her consent was consistent with practices at the time, and neither Henrietta Lacks nor her family received compensation for the extraction or use of the cells. Although some information about the origins of the HeLa cell line became known to researchers after 1970, Henrietta Lacks and her family were not informed of the cell line's existence until 1975.
