Kathy Martin: podcast appearances and interviews

Kathy Martin is a Canadian ornithologist with expertise in arctic and alpine grouse, ptarmigan, and tree cavity-nesting vertebrates. She has held academic positions, including a professorship in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, and has also served as a senior research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. Martin was the president of the American Ornithological Society from 2018 to 2020 and remains an emeritus scientist following her retirement from the Canadian Federal Government in December 2020.

Throughout her career, Martin has been active in Canada's Conservation Biology research and higher education communities since the 1980s. She represented Canada on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission for grouse during the 1990s and served on the council of the American Ornithologists Union from 2003 to 2007. Additionally, she chaired the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Ecology and Evolution Grant Committee and was a founding member of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution, serving on its Governing Council between 2008 and 2011.

Her research includes long-term projects on alpine bird ecology and cavity-nesting vertebrate communities, with sites across the Americas and Australia. Martin's contributions to conservation biology include developing one of Canada's earliest courses in the field and co-editing a volume titled Ecology and Conservation of Mountain Birds, published by Cambridge University Press in 2023. Her work has been recognized with awards such as The Wildlife Society's Wildlife Publication award in 1996.
