Donald McNichol Sutherland was a Canadian actor born on 17 July 1935 and passed away on 20 June 2024. With a career spanning over six decades, he received numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards, and was nominated for a BAFTA Award. Despite his extensive body of work, he was considered one of the best actors never nominated for an Academy Award, although he received an Academy Honorary Award in 2017. Sutherland gained recognition through roles in war films such as The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H, and Kelly's Heroes. He also established himself with leading parts in films like Klute, Don't Look Now, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and supporting roles in additional notable movies including Animal House, JFK, Cold Mountain, and The Italian Job. He portrayed President Snow in The Hunger Games series from 2012 to 2015. On television, Sutherland earned acclaim for his performance as Mikhail Fetisov in the HBO thriller Citizen X, which garnered him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. He also played Clark Clifford in the HBO biographical war film Path to War, winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. Throughout his life, he was recognized as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1978 and was elevated to Companion in 2019. He was inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Sutherland was also known for his activism, particularly his outspoken anti-war stance during the Vietnam War, and he is the father of actors Kiefer, Rossif, and Angus Sutherland.
