About Don Brash

Donald Thomas Brash, born on 24 September 1940, is a New Zealand former politician and economist. He served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand for fourteen years, from 1988 to April 2002, a tenure during which he was responsible for overseeing the country's monetary policy. Following his resignation from the Reserve Bank, Brash was elected as a list Member of Parliament for the National Party in the 2002 general election, despite the party's overall defeat. He became the leader of the National Party in October 2003 after challenging Bill English, and held this position until November 2006. During his leadership, he delivered a notable speech at Orewa in January 2004, which expressed opposition to perceived Māori separatism and the measures designed to benefit Māori in New Zealand. Under Brash's leadership, the National Party achieved significant gains in the 2005 general election, marking its best result since 1996, although it did not win enough seats to form a government. He resigned as party leader in November 2006 and retired from Parliament in February 2007. In 2008, Brash was appointed as an adjunct professor of Banking at Auckland University of Technology and also held an adjunct position at La Trobe University in Melbourne. He later became the leader of the ACT New Zealand party in April 2011, a role he held until after the 2011 general election when he resigned due to the party's poor performance. In 2016, he established the lobby group Hobson's Pledge.
