About David Alan Grier

David Alan Grier, born on June 30, 1956, is an American actor and comedian recognized for his work on stage and screen. He gained popularity through his multiple roles on the television series In Living Color from 1990 to 1994 and as Reverend Leon Lonnie Love on the Fox comedy series Martin from 1993 to 1997. In 2004, he was ranked number 94 on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. Grier made his feature film debut in the drama Streamers directed by Robert Altman in 1983, for which he received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival. His filmography includes roles in A Soldier's Story (1984), Boomerang (1992), Jumanji (1995), Baadasssss! (2003), Bewitched (2005), and more recently, They Cloned Tyrone (2023), The Color Purple (2023), and The American Society of Magical Negroes (2024). On stage, Grier has received critical acclaim including a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role in the Broadway revival of A Soldier's Play in 2021. He has also been Tony-nominated for portraying Jackie Robinson in The First (1983), Henry Brown in Race (2009), and Sporting Life in Porgy and Bess (2012). His other Broadway credits include Dreamgirls (1981) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1996). Grier's extensive television work features roles such as Bernard on Damon, Jerome Dagget on DAG, David Bellows on Life with Bonnie, Joe Carmichael on The Carmichael Show, and the Lion in The Wiz Live! among many others. He also created and executive-produced the satirical show Chocolate News for Comedy Central and is currently starring as Ron on the NBC sitcom St. Denis Medical.
