Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. is an American journalist and commentator with a career spanning several decades in broadcast and digital media. He began his journalism career in Texas and gained national prominence in September 1961 following his reporting on Hurricane Carla, which contributed to saving thousands of lives. Throughout his career, Rather reported on significant historical events including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Gulf War, the September 11 attacks, the Iraq War, and the war on terror. He was present in Dallas in November 1963 during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and subsequently served as a White House correspondent for CBS News starting in 1964. He also worked as a foreign correspondent in London and Vietnam before returning to cover U.S. politics. In 1981, Rather was appointed as the anchor of the CBS Evening News, a position he held for 24 years. Alongside other prominent anchors, he was regarded as one of the leading figures in American television journalism during the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Following a controversy in 2004 over an unverified news report, Rather left his anchor role in 2005 and continued to work with CBS until 2006. He later hosted investigative programs on AXS TV, including Dan Rather Reports, and authored a newsletter titled 'Steady' on Substack. Since 2018, he has hosted the online newscast The News with Dan Rather and has engaged in long-form interviews with entertainment figures.
