About Cory Booker

Cory Anthony Booker, born on April 27, 1969, is an American politician and lawyer who currently serves as a United States senator from New Jersey. He has held this position since 2013 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Booker is notably the first African-American U.S. senator from New Jersey. Prior to his Senate service, he was the 38th mayor of Newark from 2006 to 2013 and served on the Municipal Council of Newark for the Central Ward from 1998 to 2002. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey, Booker attended Stanford University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1991 and a master's degree the following year. He studied at Queen’s College, Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar, and also attended Yale Law School. In 1998, he won a seat on the Newark Municipal Council through a notably activist campaign that included a hunger strike and living in a tent to highlight urban development issues. He ran for mayor in 2002 but was defeated, then won the office in 2006, during which time he oversaw significant increases in affordable housing and a reduction in the city’s budget deficit. He was re-elected in 2010. As a senator, Booker has been a prominent figure, including testifying against another senator during Jeff Sessions’s 2017 confirmation hearing and running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. In 2025, he delivered the longest speech in Senate history, lasting over 25 hours, in protest of Donald Trump’s second presidency.
