Conan Christopher O'Brien, born on April 18, 1963, is an American television host, comedian, writer, actor, and podcaster. He is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished television hosts of all time. O'Brien gained prominence through his late-night talk shows, including Late Night with Conan O'Brien which he hosted from 1993 to 2009, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien from 2009 to 2010, and Conan from 2010 to 2021. His early career involved writing for notable comedy series such as Saturday Night Live from 1988 to 1991 and The Simpsons from 1991 to 1993. He also hosted a podcast series titled Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend beginning in 2018 and starred in a travel show, Conan O'Brien Must Go, on HBO Max in 2024. Raised in a family rooted in Irish Catholic traditions in Brookline, Massachusetts, O'Brien attended Harvard University, where he served as president of The Harvard Lampoon and graduated with an AB degree in history and literature. Before entering television, he wrote for various comedy shows in Los Angeles and was part of the writing staff for Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. Selected by NBC to succeed David Letterman as host of Late Night in 1993, O'Brien's tenure helped the show earn a Primetime Emmy Award and become highly regarded despite initial challenges. His hosting style is characterized by spontaneous humor and a mix of quirky and narrative-driven content. His remotes and international travel series, such as Conan Without Borders, are also well-received. He retired from late-night television in June 2021 after nearly 30 years in the role.
