Conan Christopher O'Brien, born on April 18, 1963, is an American television host, comedian, writer, actor, and podcaster. He is widely regarded as one of the best television hosts of all time and is best known for hosting late-night talk shows including Late Night with Conan O'Brien from 1993 to 2009, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien from 2009 to 2010, and Conan from 2010 to 2021. Before his hosting career, O'Brien worked as a writer for Saturday Night Live from 1988 to 1991 and for The Simpsons from 1991 to 1993. He also hosted the podcast series Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend starting in 2018 and starred in a travel show titled Conan O'Brien Must Go on HBO Max in 2024. Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, he was raised in an Irish Catholic family and served as president of The Harvard Lampoon while attending Harvard University, where he earned an AB degree in history and literature. His early career included writing for the sketch comedy series Not Necessarily the News and for several comedy shows in Los Angeles before joining SNL. He joined the writing staff of The Simpsons for two seasons prior to being selected by Lorne Michaels and NBC to succeed David Letterman as host of Late Night in 1993. Despite initial challenges, his tenure on Late Night earned a Primetime Emmy Award and made him the longest-serving host in the franchise's history by 2025. O'Brien has also hosted major award shows, including the Emmy Awards, the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and the Academy Awards. Recognized for his spontaneous and self-deprecating hosting style, he has also been celebrated for his remote segments and international travel series. O'Brien's career in late-night television spanned nearly 30 years before his retirement in June 2021.
