Christopher Carl Carter, born on October 13, 1956, in Bellflower, California, is an American television and film producer, director, and writer. He graduated from California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in journalism and worked for thirteen years at Surfing Magazine before embarking on his career in television. Carter initially worked on television films for Walt Disney Studios before gaining widespread recognition in the 1990s for creating the Fox science fiction supernatural drama series The X-Files. The series achieved high viewership ratings and facilitated Carter's ability to negotiate the creation of additional series. Through his production company, Ten Thirteen Productions, he created three more television series, including Millennium, Harsh Realm, and The Lone Gunmen. Millennium was notable for its doomsday theme and received critical approval, although it had low viewer numbers. Harsh Realm was canceled after three episodes, and The Lone Gunmen lasted for only a single season. Carter’s film work includes writing both The X-Files' cinematic spin-offs, the successful 1998 film The X-Files and the less well-received 2008 film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the latter of which he also directed. His notable accomplishments in television have earned him multiple accolades, including eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations. In addition to his work in entertainment, Carter is recognized as a four-time best-selling author and is affiliated with Southern Glazers Wine & Spirits.
