Charlton Heston was an American actor and political activist born as John Charles Carter on October 4, 1923. He gained prominence for his leading roles in a variety of Hollywood films, including biblical epics, historical dramas, science-fiction works, and action movies. Among his most notable performances are his portrayals of Moses in The Ten Commandments and the title role in Ben-Hur, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Actor. Throughout his career, Heston earned numerous accolades including an Academy Award, Golden Globe Awards, a David di Donatello Award, and various honorary honors such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame Star and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His other significant credits include films such as The Greatest Show on Earth, Secret of the Incas, Planet of the Apes, Julius Caesar, Soylent Green, and Tombstone, among others. Heston was also recognized for his advocacy; in the 1950s and early 1960s, he was one of the few Hollywood actors to openly denounce racism and support the civil rights movement. In 1987, he transitioned from the Democratic to the Republican Party, founding a conservative political action committee and supporting Ronald Reagan. He served as the five-term president of the National Rifle Association from 1998 to 2003. After publicly revealing his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease in 2002, Heston retired from acting and stepped down from his NRA presidency. He passed away on April 5, 2008, leaving a legacy that encompasses both his cinematic achievements and his political activism.
