Carol Creighton Burnett, born on April 26, 1933, is an American comedian, actress, singer, and writer. She has played both dramatic and comedic roles on stage and screen, earning numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. Her achievements include seven Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy Award, seven Primetime Emmy Awards, twelve People's Choice Awards, two Peabody Awards, and a Tony Award. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1975, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2013, and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2015. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, her family moved to Hollywood, where she attended Hollywood High School and studied theater and musical comedy at UCLA. Burnett gained early stage recognition with a Broadway performance in 1959 in Once Upon a Mattress, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. She made her television debut on The Garry Moore Show, where she appeared regularly for three years and won her first Emmy Award in 1962. Her most prominent work includes an 11-year run as the star of The Carol Burnett Show, which aired from 1967 to 1978 and made her the first woman to host a comedy-variety series.
