Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama, born on January 17, 1964, is an American attorney and author who served as First Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. She is the wife of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, and was the first African-American to hold the position of First Lady. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, she graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. In her early legal career, she worked at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met her future husband. She later worked in nonprofits and served as the associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago, eventually becoming vice president for community and external affairs of the University of Chicago Medical Center. Michelle Obama campaigned for her husband's presidential bids in 2008 and 2012. During her time as First Lady, she was an advocate for issues including poverty awareness, education, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy eating. She has authored four books, notably her memoir Becoming which was a New York Times bestseller, and The Light We Carry. Since leaving the White House, she has maintained significant cultural influence, ranking first in the Gallup poll for the most admired woman in the United States for three consecutive years.
