William Michael Albert Broad, known professionally as Billy Idol, is an English rock singer who gained prominence in the 1970s as the lead vocalist of the punk rock band Generation X. The band achieved success in the United Kingdom with three studio albums released on Chrysalis Records before disbanding. In 1981, Idol relocated to New York City to pursue a solo career, collaborating with guitarist Steve Stevens. His self-titled debut album released in 1982 found commercial success and helped establish his presence on MTV through iconic music videos for singles such as Dancing with Myself and White Wedding. His second album, Rebel Yell, released in 1983, garnered significant commercial success featuring hit singles like Rebel Yell and Eyes Without a Face. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Idol continued releasing music through the 1980s and 1990s, including albums like Whiplash Smile, Charmed Life, and Cyberpunk, as well as a greatest hits collection that achieved platinum status in the UK. He took a break from the public eye during the latter part of the 1990s, partly due to a motorcycle accident in 1990. Idol returned to musical activity with albums such as Devil's Playground, Kings & Queens of the Underground, and Dream Into It. Throughout his career, he has received multiple Grammy Award nominations and in 2023 was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2026, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Steve Stevens.
