Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgård, born on 25 August 1976, is a Swedish actor and the son of actor Stellan Skarsgård. He began acting at the age of seven but stopped at thirteen. After serving in the Swedish Navy, Skarsgård returned to acting and received his first role in the American comedy film Zoolander in 2001. He gained international recognition for his portrayal of vampire Eric Northman in the television series True Blood, which ran from 2008 to 2014. Skarsgård also played Brad Colbert in the miniseries Generation Kill in 2008. His film credits include Melancholia, Battleship, and The Legend of Tarzan. He starred in the drama series Big Little Lies from 2017 to 2019 as an abusive husband, a performance that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award. His other notable works include films such as Long Shot, Godzilla vs. Kong, Passing, The Northman, Infinity Pool, and Pillion. In the miniseries The Stand, he portrayed Randall Flagg, and he played tech mogul Lukas Matsson in the drama series Succession from 2021 to 2023, earning nominations for two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. Skarsgård currently stars in the science-fiction comedy series Murderbot, which began in 2025.
