About Alan Turing

Alan Mathison Turing was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher, and theoretical biologist. He made significant contributions to theoretical computer science by formalizing the concepts of algorithm and computation through the development of the Turing machine, which is considered a model of a general-purpose computer. Turing's work laid the foundations for modern computing and earned him the reputation of being the father of theoretical computer science. Born in London and raised in southern England, Turing graduated from King's College, Cambridge, and earned a doctorate from Princeton University in 1938. During World War II, he worked at Bletchley Park for Britain's codebreaking efforts, leading Hut 8 in German naval cryptanalysis and devising techniques that accelerated the decryption of German ciphers, notably improving methods such as the Polish bomba. His efforts contributed substantially to the Allied victory in various military engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic. After the war, Turing designed the Automatic Computing Engine at the National Physical Laboratory, one of the first stored-program computers. He later joined the University of Manchester’s Computing Machine Laboratory, assisting in early computer development and exploring mathematical biology. His research in morphogenesis and chemical reactions was pioneering, although much of his work was classified at the time. Turing was prosecuted for homosexual acts in 1952 and accepted hormone treatment as an alternative to imprisonment. He died in 1954 from cyanide poisoning, with the cause of death officially recorded as suicide. Turing's legacy is widely celebrated today, with recognitions including statues, honors, and his portrait on the Bank of England £50 note. In 2013, he was posthumously pardoned by Queen Elizabeth II.
