The Voice at Endor | Familiar Spirits, Part 1
Something answered Saul at Endor. Most teaching says it was the prophet Samuel. I do not believe it was, and in this episode I tell you why. We start with a word almost nobody looks up. Familiar. When the King James translators reached these passages they did not choose a frightening word, they chose a domestic one. Familiar comes from the Latin for household. Of the family. Of the house. A familiar spirit is a household spirit, which means it is not a stranger. It is something that has been near enough, long enough, to learn the family's business. Then I lay out the argument on 1 Samuel 28. Saul went to a medium. That is not in question. So if God permitted the real Samuel to come up through that woman, He honored the very practice He called an abomination in Deuteronomy 18. God does not forbid something on Monday and work through it on Tuesday. Tertullian made this same case around the year 200. Augustine, Aquinas, and Calvin all landed in the same place, and they got there by reading the prohibition rather than studying the phenomenon. We walk the four things these spirits do. They observe. They imitate. They speak accurately, which is why accuracy is never the test. And they wait. I also draw a line that gets missed and does damage when it does. A familiar spirit does not equate to a person having demonic influence. Consulting is one thing, influence is another, and possession is a third thing entirely. A believer can be influenced. A believer cannot be possessed, because the title to your life transferred at Calvary. Scripture in this episode, King James throughout: 1 Samuel 28, 1 Chronicles 10, Leviticus 19 and 20, Deuteronomy 18, Job 1, 1 Peter 5, Acts 16, Luke 4, John 10:10, 1 Corinthians 6, Colossians 2:15. Part one of two. Part two takes up how these spirits get in, and what that looks like in this culture right now. I am Marc Little, pastor, attorney, and political commentator.
