  Sep 29, 202630 minS1

Nick Orr bought a moving company in April 2019 without researching the industry first, and he still works 24-hour shifts at the fire station. In this episode you'll hear how Nick went from picking up side jobs with a fellow firefighter to owning ATX Firefighter Moving in Austin, and how he runs it around a one day on, two days off fire schedule. You'll hear why he signed with an SEO company heading into a slow season, when he wasn't sure he could afford it the next month, and what happened once he stuck with it. The business doubled, then doubled again the following year. You'll also hear why he stepped back when his twins were born, and how he and his co-owner Ryan, another firefighter, are building a team that can run the day to day without them. What you'll walk away with: -Why Nick has kept the same SEO company since 2020, and how it "paid dividends" in the first two years -How to split the work when both owners have full-time careers on different shifts -Why having a second career takes the money fights out of a partnership -The way Nick passes a customer-first culture down to his crews: show up, get on the truck, and let your lead teach the new guys -What losing 20 to 30 pounds working both jobs taught him about asking for help -His plan to turn the company into a path into firefighting, EMS and police for kids coming out of high school About Nick: Nick Orr has been a firefighter since 2013 and took over ATX Firefighter Moving in April 2019, bringing on fellow firefighter Ryan as co-owner in 2020. Today the company runs 75 to 100 moves a month on two to three trucks, and Nick wants to double that by next year. How Responders Became The Go-To Mover For Maine's Millionaires

  Sep 28, 202640 minS1

It started with one summer home move for the former CEO of a major bank, and the referrals kept coming. In this episode, you'll hear how Ely built Responders Moving and Storage in central Maine into the company high net worth homeowners call when they don't want to think about their move at all. You'll see how he stacked moving, packing, storage, portable trailers and dumpsters under one roof so a customer never has to call anyone else. You'll learn how he got a new company to five jobs a day in under two years, and what he did to stop answering every sales call himself. And you'll hear what five years of professional poker in Los Angeles taught him about keeping wealthy customers happy. What you'll walk away with: - The Responders one-stop model: full service moving, packing, a 15,000 sq ft climate controlled storage facility, 8 enclosed portable storage trailers from 12 to 28 feet, and 40 roll-off dumpsters - How a VIP move manager, paid a percentage of the move total, takes a wealthy client's move from A to Z so they never have to worry - How one job for a bank CEO's property manager led straight to an actor's move - Ely's networking rule: don't bring up your business, ask people why they're at a chamber event at six o'clock on a Wednesday - Why he treats local sponsorships as pure branding and expects nothing back - How he handed sales to a full-time hire using his own call recordings and a checklist, starting her on Mondays and Wednesdays - Why Google Local Services Ads beat every other paid channel they tested About Ely: Ely co-founded Responders Moving and Storage in central Maine, which ran its first move on September 26, 2024 and now runs five or six trucks a day in peak season. How Zip to Zip Moving Went From 3 Moves a Day to 23

  Sep 23, 202639 minS1

When Russo joined Zip to Zip in 2018, the company ran three moves a day and she was answering the phones herself. What This Episode Covers You'll hear how a five-person operation turned into a roughly 100-person company doing 23 moves a day, and how the sales engine underneath it made that possible. Russo walks through why she treats every call as a consultation instead of a quote, how she trains reps to hear what a customer is actually worried about, and where she draws the line between automating the busywork and keeping the human touch. If you run the phones at a moving company, this is the playbook for turning more of your leads into booked jobs. What You'll Walk Away With -Why about 70% of her customer communication happens over text, and the automatic message that fires the second a call goes unanswered -How to train a rep to catch the real concern behind the call, whether that's price, the moving date, or "are you actually going to show up" -The follow-up system that sets a reminder on every single lead, timed to when that customer will actually pick up -Why she asks every lost lead what made them choose a competitor, and the one answer she's completely fine with -Where automation stops: roughly half the repetitive work gone, zero of the conversations that close the job -Her three metrics for a strong salesperson, and not one of them is close rate on its own -The education emails that remind customers about the things they forgot to ask, from plants to box counts About The Guest Russo joined Zip to Zip Moving in 2018 as a salesperson when the company was five people running three jobs a day. She now leads sales and operations for a roughly 100-person company running 23 jobs a day across the Northeast. Why This Moving Company Refuses to Hire Experienced Movers

  Sep 18, 202642 minS1

Brandon and Julie built The Home Moving Solution in Albany, Georgia on a rule most owners would call backwards: they refuse to hire experienced movers. Brandon would rather take a complete rookie and train them "the HMS way", because to him half of this business is customer service, and that's easier to teach someone with no bad habits to unlearn. In this episode he lays out his hiring philosophy, explains how a broken back forced him to finally step back and trust his crew, and makes the case for keeping a moving company small on purpose. Julie shares what it's really like to run the business alongside your spouse. What This Episode Covers - Why Brandon only hires green movers and trains them from scratch - What it's like running a moving company as a married couple - Growing from mattress deliveries into a four-truck operation - The gear that belongs on every moving truck - The injury that forced him to delegate, and how the crew stepped up Timestamps 0:00 From Mattress Runs to Four Trucks 7:29 Why They Only Hire Rookies 19:28 Must-have Gear on Every Truck 25:49 The Injury That Changed Everything Connect with The Home Moving Solution Website: https://www.thehomemovingsolution.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/homemovingsolution/ Google: https://share.google/BGaJGediJgfSCl2q7 Run a moving company? How Hello Movers Does 300 Moves a Month Across Two Locations

  Sep 15, 202642 minS1

Xavier Estronza didn't come from moving, he came from Wall Street cold-calling and a magazine ad desk, and he used both to build Hello Movers into a two-location operation running over 300 moves a month. In this episode you'll hear how Xavier went from selling aggregated leads, to a broker gig he walked away from in three months, to running his own trucks so he could control the whole job start to finish. You'll learn how he grew Tampa to the bulk of that 300-a-month volume and stood Orlando up to 100 moves on its own. He breaks down the pricing philosophy he won't budge on, the way he turns foremen and drivers into salespeople, and why he pays movers well and keeps them for years. If you run a moving company and you're trying to scale past a single market, this one's a blueprint. What you'll walk away with: -Why he'd rather lose the job being honest than underbid it and inherit a headache down the road -How he prices to stay near the top of the market and still closes, by selling himself, not the company -The hiring approach that turns truck drivers and foremen into commission earning sales reps -Why paying movers a livable wage is the real retention strategy (and how he took guys from $15 to $27–28/hr) -How he pays for reviews and materials sold on the truck without making it about tip-chasing -Why Google Local Services (Google Guarantee) is his top channel and how he thinks about spend and consistency -The untapped email-and-text play sitting in every established mover's CRM About the guest: Xavier Estronza is the founder of Hello Movers, which runs roughly 300 moves a month across Tampa and Orlando and has close to 1,500 five-star Google reviews. He started the company in 2018 after learning the industry from the lead-generation and brokerage side. Timestamps: 00:00 From Wall Street and lead-gen to running his own trucks 06:01 Honest pricing and why underbidding wrecks the industry 14:31 Building a team: hiring, paying, and keeping A-players 25:55 Marketing that works: Google Guarantee and consistent spend 33:11 The untapped CRM email/text campaign idea Connect with Xavier Estronza: Hello Movers: https://hellomovers.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hellomoversllc/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hellomoversllc/ Connect With Heavy Lifting Marketing: Website: https://www.heavyliftingmarketing.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theheavyliftingmarketing/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61571600552571 Phone: (754)799-7626
