Episode #14
The one where we review Resident Evil and Is God Is
Directed by Zach Cregger, Resident Evil strips away years of cinematic bloat to deliver a pure, pulse-pounding survival horror experience. The film follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), an unassuming medical courier who takes on one last delivery to Raccoon General Hospital on a fateful, snowy night. Unwittingly thrust right into the periphery of the infamous Raccoon City outbreak, Bryan has to navigate a living nightmare of mutated horrors armed with very little survival instinct and a whole lot of panic. Fun Flix Fact: Director Zach Cregger intentionally designed the film to take place concurrently with the events of Resident Evil 2 in an alternate contemporary timeline, focusing entirely on an ordinary civilian perspective rather than a hyper-trained special agent. Fun Flix Fact: Test screenings originally featured a few more moments of dark humour, but Cregger actively trimmed them down to ensure the atmosphere remained relentlessly claustrophobic and terrifying. Next up, we are exploring Aleshea Harris’s critically acclaimed feature directorial debut, Is God Is . Adapted from her own award-winning play, this Southern Gothic revenge thriller follows twin sisters Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson)—both marked by severe burn scars from a childhood fire—as they embark on an epic, mythic cross-country quest to hunt down the father who tried to destroy them. Boasting an incredible ensemble cast including Vivica A. Fox, Sterling K. Brown, and Janelle Monáe, it is a visually arresting, genre-blending masterpiece. Fun Flix Fact: Director Aleshea Harris wanted to deliberately celebrate and validate the complex, righteous anger of her protagonists without softening their edges for mainstream palatability, keeping the tone fiercely loyal to the stage production's theatrical bite. To celebrate a decade since the culmination of the original live-action cinematic franchise, we are looking back at Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) . Bringing Milla Jovovich's Alice back to where it all began in Raccoon City, this entry leans hard into breakneck editing, post-apocalyptic set pieces, and a frantic race against time to release the airborne antivirus.
