  Episode #38

  School Daze (1988)

  Aug 27, 20262h 28mS2

School Daze is a 1988 musical comedy-drama directed by Spike Lee that takes place at a fictional historically Black college, Mission College. The story follows Dap Dunlap , a politically active student who becomes increasingly frustrated with the school's social divisions, particularly between students involved in activism and the more socially focused fraternity and sorority crowd. At the center of the conflict is the rivalry between the Gamma Phi Gamma fraternity and the Gamma Rays sorority , whose members are caught up in status, appearance, and campus politics. As homecoming approaches, tensions surrounding colorism, class, Greek life, identity, relationships, and Black consciousness boil over. Dap's activism clashes with his cousin Julian's fraternity lifestyle, forcing both men to confront very different ideas about what it means to be Black and educated. At its core, School Daze is about Black college students struggling with identity and division while trying to figure out what they stand for. It uses comedy, music, dance, and satire to tackle serious issues that were—and remain—relevant within the Black community. Email: Childishgrownups3@gmail.com Instagram: Thechildishgrownupsshow
