Growing up between her grandmother's remote farm in rural eastern Poland and the industrial coal-mining region of Silesia, Emilia experienced two very different relationships to land, labor, history, and belonging. Those contrasting environments became a foundation for her artistic practice, which draws on oral histories, myths, rituals, and objects as forms of archives and systems of knowledge. Her work also embraces absence—those fragments of cultural history that have been dismissed, forgotten, or lost—and asks what might emerge when we acknowledge that some stories can never be fully recovered. Rather than limiting herself to a single medium, Emilia allows the ideas she wants to explore and communicate to determine how she makes the work, moving freely between photography, writing, sound, and sculpture. The images became the foundation for The Anonymous Project, an evolving collection that explores the memories, relationships, and everyday moments preserved in photographs whose original subjects and stories have been lost. What began as a fascination with found photographs has grown into a much larger exploration of photography, memory, and the stories we attach to images. That interest in photography has carried throughout Shulman's work, whether through The Anonymous Project or through collaborations with photographers including Martin Parr and Omar Victor Diop. He also produced and directed I Am Martin Parr, a film exploring the life and work of the British photographer. Across these projects, Shulman approaches photography from different perspectives—as a collector, collaborator, filmmaker, and storyteller—while continually asking what photographs reveal about the people who made them, the people they depict, and the cultures in which they were created.   When photographer Bill Wishner began his career more than three decades ago, his focus was music—particularly jazz. His photographs documented performances and musicians, eventually leading to his role as co-editor of Monterey Jazz Festival: 40 Legendary Years. Over time, however, his photographic interests shifted from the stage to the urban environment, where he began looking for the unexpected images hidden in the walls and surfaces of cities around the world. Beginning in 2012, Bill embraced the role of what he calls a "Visual Hunter," turning his attention to the transformative visual art and aesthetics found on urban walls. His Art of the City Wall project explores the layers, textures, shapes, and juxtapositions created by graffiti, posters, weathering, and the passage of time. Rather than simply documenting what he finds, Bill uses framing and observation to transform these fragments of the urban landscape into photographs that invite us to see familiar environments in entirely new ways. His books Artifacts and De-Faced extend this exploration, while his longtime commitment to photography also includes founding f8 Pasadena Salon and co-directing Pasadena Photography Arts, organizations dedicated to fostering dialogue, education, and opportunities for photographers. Through their work producing several weekly and regional newspapers serving Baldwin County along Alabama's Gulf Coast, they combine photography, reporting, and editing to document the lives of the people and places that define their community. At a time when local journalism faces shrinking advertising revenues, declining readership, and consolidation by large media companies, they have invested in something many have written off: independent community newspapers. Their partnership demonstrates that local journalism is about far more than delivering the news.
