John 3:1-36
Time to stop and review the Nicodemus discussion. We need to go back to the beginning of John chapter 3, to read again the words of being "born again." Now we enter the discussion and begin to see that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. And this way is simulateously wide and vast and welcoming and yet, as unique as Christ's own self. It is a wide highway and a narrow way, a ladder to heaven, but a way with angels ascending and descending. The way of everlasting life requires transformation of certain types, because what is old must become new and what is dead must become alive again. We imagine this conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus at night is more like "whispering in the dark" and less like a clear cut math problem to work out. Read along as Matthew guides us through the Gospel of John, the third chapter. Jesus and Nicodemus are at the center of the our reading. Then John the Baptist enters the next scene and places God's Spirit at the center of our reading. We pray that our reading is illuminated by God's abiding Spirit.
