Sometimes a politician tells you exactly what he is, out loud — and everyone's so busy reacting to the threat that they miss the confession inside it. That's Speaker Mike Johnson. Rallying donors about the midterms, he warned that if Republicans lose, Democrats will "turn every committee of Congress into an investigative body" and go after the President's family, cabinet, and donors. Then: "I run the protection program. I'll take care of you." Sit with what he called the nightmare. Not recession, not war, not people losing healthcare — oversight. Subpoenas and hearings. One commentator said it sounded like a mob boss, and it does. Follow his fear where it leads. He says the investigations would shake markets and help our adversaries. Fine — but if merely investigating the President and his family would be that explosive, the real question isn't how to stop it. It's what did they do? You don't fear an audit unless you know what's in the books. And here's the part that should bother everyone regardless of party: congressional oversight isn't a partisan weapon. It's a core constitutional function — how the founders kept a president from becoming a king. Johnson calling it a "nightmare" means it'd be a nightmare for Congress to do its job. To be fair, investigations can be abused — both parties have done it. But that doesn't save him, because he didn't call the probes baseless. He said he runs a protection program. You don't need protection from baseless accusations. You need it when you're worried what a real one would find. Winning an election was never a shield from accountability.
