Lookout Fire Burns 444 Acres Near Spearfish As Crews Reach 71% Containment
Spearfish, South Dakota – The Lookout Fire has burned 444 acres near Spearfish after starting on September 7 about a quarter-mile north of the city. Officials said the human-caused fire was ignited by hay bales in a ditch. The fire has burned through short grass and ponderosa pine. As of September 10–12, the fire was 71% contained, with about 113 personnel working on the incident. Official drone mapping has documented the burned area and fire line. No structures were lost. Evacuations for Lookout Mountain, Kerwin Road and Lookout Vista have been lifted. Interstate 90 has fully reopened, and the temporary flight restriction has also been lifted. Command of the incident is transitioning from a Type 3 Incident Management Team back to local agencies.
