Zachary Israel Braff, born on April 6, 1975, is an American actor and filmmaker known for his role as John Michael J. D. Dorian on the television series Scrubs. His portrayal of the character on the NBC and ABC series from 2001 to 2010, and again in 2026, earned him nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2005, as well as three Golden Globe Awards between 2005 and 2007. Braff's acting credits also include performances in films such as The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy, The Last Kiss, The Ex, and In Dubious Battle. Additionally, he has provided voice work for movies including Chicken Little and Oz the Great and Powerful. In 2004, Braff made his directorial debut with the film Garden State, which he also starred in, wrote, and contributed to its soundtrack. The film was shot in New Jersey with a modest budget and achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing over 35 million dollars. It received numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Soundtrack Album. Braff directed his second feature film, Wish I Was Here, in 2014, partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign.
