Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese contemporary artist born on 22 March 1929. Her work primarily involves sculpture and installation art, but she also engages in painting, performance, video art, fashion, poetry, fiction, and other artistic disciplines. Kusama's art is rooted in conceptual art and incorporates elements of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, art brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism. Her work often features autobiographical, psychological, and sexual themes. Recognized as one of Japan's most significant artists, she is also known as the world's top-selling female artist and the most successful living artist. Kusama's influence extends to her contemporaries, including figures like Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. Raised in Matsumoto, she trained at the Kyoto City University of Arts in a traditional Japanese painting style called nihonga and was inspired by American abstract impressionism. In 1958, she moved to New York City and became active in the avant-garde scene of the 1960s, notably within the pop-art movement. She gained public attention through her participation in happenings that featured naked participants painted with bright polka dots, embracing the hippie counterculture of the late 1960s. After a period of relative obscurity in the 1970s, her work experienced a revival during the 1980s. Kusama has continued her artistic practice in museums worldwide since the 1950s.
